The Car Man at Sadler's Wells Theatre is Matthew Bourne’s award-winning dance thriller. Loosely based on Bizet’s opera, it shifts the story to a greasy 1950s garage-diner in the American Mid-West, where the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger disrupts a small town.
The characters are driven into a spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge, with Matthew Bourne’s storytelling set against music by Terry Davies featuring Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite (after Bizet’s Carmen). The production draws on one of New Adventures’ most recognisable scores.
