The Car Man at Sadler's Wells Theatre is Matthew Bourne’s award-winning dance production, loosely based on Bizet’s opera. It places a 19th-century Spanish cigarette factory story into a 1950s garage-diner in the American Mid-West, where the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger disrupts a small town.
The production follows the community as heat, desire, greed, lust, betrayal and revenge drive the action forward. Matthew Bourne’s storytelling is paired with music by Terry Davies, featuring Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite after Bizet’s Carmen.
The result is a dance work built around a dramatic score and a clearly told story, making it easy to follow for audiences looking for a character-driven evening at the theatre.
Running time: 1 hour 55 minutes, including one 20 minute interval.
This production uses haze and theatrical smoke effects, plus a gunshot effect. It is recommended for ages 12 and over, and strictly no under 5s are allowed. No exchanges or refunds are available after purchase.
