The Car Man at Sadler's Wells Theatre is Matthew Bourne’s award-winning dance production, loosely based on Bizet’s opera. It moves the familiar 19th-century Spanish cigarette factory setting to a greasy 1950s garage-diner in the American Mid-West, where the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger sets off a chain of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.
The production combines Matthew Bourne’s storytelling with one of the most dramatic scores in New Adventures’ repertoire. The music by Terry Davies features Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite, after Bizet’s Carmen, supporting a story built around heat, desire and escalating tension.
Presented as a dance thriller, The Car Man brings together a recognisable musical foundation and Bourne’s vivid stagecraft in a tightly paced evening of dance.
Duration: 1 hour 55 mins, including one 20 minute interval.
