The Car Man at Sadler's Wells Theatre is Matthew Bourne’s award-winning dance work, loosely based on Bizet’s opera. It places a small-town story in a greasy 1950s garage-diner in the American Mid-West, where the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger sets off a chain of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.
The production combines Matthew Bourne’s storytelling with music by Terry Davies, featuring Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite after Bizet’s Carmen. It is described as a dance thriller, with one of the most dramatic scores in New Adventures’ repertoire.
The familiar 19th-century Spanish cigarette factory setting is reimagined for this production, with the story driven by heat, desire and escalating tension.
Running time: 1 hour 55 mins, including one 20 minute interval.
Age guidance: recommended for ages 12+. Strictly no under 5s. This production uses haze, theatrical smoke effects and a gunshot effect.
