The Car Man at Sadler's Wells Theatre is Matthew Bourne’s award-winning dance thriller. Loosely based on Bizet’s ever-popular opera, it relocates the story from a 19th-century Spanish cigarette factory to a greasy 1950s garage-diner in the American Mid-West.
When a handsome and enigmatic stranger arrives, the small-town community is pulled into greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. The production combines Bourne’s vivid storytelling with music by Terry Davies, featuring Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite after Bizet’s Carmen.
One of the most striking scores in New Adventures’ repertoire, The Car Man uses dance to tell a tense, dramatic story centred on desire and its consequences.
Duration: 1 hour 55 mins, including one 20 minute interval.
This production uses haze and theatrical smoke effects, and a gunshot effect. It is recommended for ages 12+, and strictly no under 5s. No exchanges or refunds are available after purchase.
