Fences at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s play set in 1950s Pittsburgh. Troy Maxson has cheated death once, but the past keeps closing in on him. At home, his wife Rose is trying to hold the family together while their son Cory looks towards a future with more freedom than Troy had.
The play follows a family under pressure as hopes, tempers and long-held resentments begin to collide. Troy jokes and tells stories on Pittsburgh’s streets, but the tensions inside the home steadily build towards a reckoning that could change the family’s future.
Directed by award-winning Daniel Bailey, this new production brings one of America’s most influential 20th-century writers back to the stage in a story about ambition, family and the choices that shape both.
