Fences at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh and returning in a new production directed by award-winning Daniel Bailey. The story follows Troy Maxson, a man whose past still presses in on the present, as tensions grow at home and the family faces a reckoning.
At the centre of the play is the relationship between Troy, his wife Rose, and their son Cory. Rose tries to hold the family together while seeing a changing world ahead for Cory, but ambition, pressure and old wounds begin to collide. The production presents one of America’s most influential 20th-century writers in a clear, contemporary setting.
Wilson’s play looks at family, responsibility and the choices that shape a life. It is a focused, character-led drama built around the Maxson household and the forces pulling it apart.
