Fences at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in the 1950s, in a new production directed by award-winning Daniel Bailey (Red Pitch, West End). It comes from one of America’s most influential 20th century writers and centres on a family under strain as the past keeps closing in.
Troy Maxson has cheated death once, but at home the pressure is building. His wife, Rose, holds the family together while hoping their son Cory can step into a wider world than Troy ever had.
Set on Pittsburgh’s streets and in the Maxson home, the play follows ambition, family tensions and the moment when dreams collide. As tempers flare, the family moves towards a reckoning that could reshape everything they know.
