Fences at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh. Troy Maxson has cheated death once, but the past keeps closing in, and the pressure at home builds as he, his wife Rose and their son Cory face a family reckoning.
This new production is directed by the award-winning Daniel Bailey, whose previous work includes Red Pitch and West End. Written by one of America’s most influential 20th century writers, the play centres on ambition, conflict and the changing world around the Maxson family.
The story focuses on a household where hopes and tempers collide, with Rose trying to hold the family together as Cory looks towards a different future from the one Troy knew.
