Fences at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh. It follows Troy Maxson, who has cheated death once, as the past continues to close in at home and on the streets.
At the centre of the story are Troy, his wife Rose, and their son Cory. Rose holds the family together while hoping Cory can step into a world with more freedom than Troy ever had. The production returns in a new staging directed by award-winning Daniel Bailey (Red Pitch, West End).
As dreams collide and tempers flare, the Maxson family moves towards a reckoning. Written by one of America’s most influential 20th-century writers, the play presents a story of ambition and family under pressure.
