Fences at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh. It follows Troy Maxson, a man whose past keeps pressing in on the present, as he tries to hold his life together at home while meeting the demands of work, family and changing times.

At the centre of the story is Troy’s wife, Rose, who keeps the family grounded, and their son Cory, whose future looks different from Troy’s own. As hopes, frustrations and old wounds collide, the play builds towards a reckoning within the Maxson household.

This new production is directed by the award-winning Daniel Bailey, whose work includes Red Pitch in the West End. Written by one of America’s most influential 20th century writers, it presents a clear, character-led drama about ambition, family and the pressure of what comes next.
