Abigail's Party at the Harold Pinter Theatre, Panton Street, London, SW1Y 4DN, is Mike Leigh's black comedy of suburban life in 1970s England. Tamzin Outhwaite stars as Beverly, one of British theatre's best-known characters.
Set in Essex in 1977, the play follows Beverly and her husband Laurence as they host new neighbours Angela and Tony for drinks, with Sue from next door also invited. As the alcohol flows and the music plays, the evening turns from awkward small talk into flirtation, tension and marital disputes.
Mike Leigh's portrait of social class, materialism and sexual tension remains a sharply written study of a drinks party that goes badly off course.
