Abigail's Party at The Harold Pinter Theatre, London, is Mike Leigh’s black comedy of suburban life in the 1970s. Set in Essex in 1977, it follows Beverly as she hosts drinks at home while the alcohol flows, Demis Roussos plays on the record player and new neighbours Angela and Tony arrive for the evening.
What starts as an awkward social gathering soon shifts into flirtation, marital disputes and rising tension. The play looks at social class, materialism and sexual tension in 1970s England through a single evening that steadily unravels.
Beverly and her husband Laurence are joined by Sue from next door, while Sue’s teenage daughter Abigail is making a noise back at home.
