About Abigail's Party
Abigail's Party at The Harold Pinter Theatre is Mike Leigh’s black comedy set in suburban Essex in 1977. Beverly is hosting a drinks party, the alcohol is flowing, Demis Roussos is on the record player and the cheese and pineapple cocktail sticks are ready.
Beverly and her husband Laurence welcome their new neighbours Angela and Tony for drinks, while Sue from next door is also invited. As the evening goes on, the awkward small talk turns into flirtation and marital tension, and the party begins to unravel.
The play is described as a razor-sharp portrait of social class, materialism and sexual tension in 1970s England.
