Abigail's Party at the Harold Pinter Theatre brings Mike Leigh's black comedy of suburban life in the 1970s to the West End, with Tamzin Outhwaite as Beverly. Set in Essex in 1977, it follows an evening in Beverly and Laurence's home as they welcome new neighbours Angela and Tony for drinks.
The party quickly turns uncomfortable as small talk gives way to flirtation, marital tension and social awkwardness. Sue from next door is also invited, while the real disturbance is happening offstage at her place, where her teenage daughter Abigail cannot keep the racket down.
Mike Leigh's portrait of class, materialism and sexual tension centres on a gathering where the alcohol is flowing, Demis Roussos is on the record player and the cocktail sticks are ready. It is a detailed look at one suburban evening as it unravels.
