Beverly is hosting drinks with her husband Laurence when new neighbours Angela and Tony come round, along with Sue from next door. With the alcohol flowing, Demis Roussos on the record player and the cheese and pineapple cocktail sticks ready, the evening quickly turns into awkward small talk, flirtation and marital tension.
Mike Leigh’s portrait of social class, materialism and sexual tension in 1970s England follows a single gathering that becomes increasingly uncomfortable as the night goes on.
