About Abigail's Party
Abigail's Party plays at the Harold Pinter Theatre, London, and brings Mike Leigh's suburban black comedy to the stage. Set in Essex in 1977, it centres on Beverly, who is hosting drinks for new neighbours Angela and Tony, with Sue from next door also invited.
What starts as a small gathering quickly becomes an evening of awkward small talk, flirtation and marital tension. With the alcohol flowing, Demis Roussos on the record player and the cheese and pineapple cocktail sticks ready, the play explores social class, materialism and sexual tension in 1970s England.
