Abigail's Party at the Harold Pinter Theatre is Mike Leigh’s black comedy about suburban life in 1970s England. Tamzin Outhwaite stars in the role of Beverly, with the story set in Essex in 1977.
Beverly is hosting drinks at home, with the alcohol flowing, Demis Roussos on the record player and cheese and pineapple cocktail sticks ready to serve. Her husband Laurence welcomes new neighbours Angela and Tony, while Sue from next door is also drawn into the evening.
What begins as small talk soon turns into flirtation, awkwardness and marital tension. The play is a portrait of social class, materialism and sexual tension, written as Mike Leigh’s razor-sharp take on a suburban gathering that goes badly off course.
