Abigail's Party is at the Harold Pinter Theatre, London. Mike Leigh’s black comedy is set in Essex in 1977, where Beverly hosts drinks in the suburban home she shares with husband Laurence. As new neighbours Angela and Tony join the evening, and Sue from next door drops in, the gathering quickly turns from small talk to flirtation, tension and marital conflict.
Tamzin Outhwaite stars as Beverly in a play that examines social class, materialism and sexual tension in 1970s England. The evening is built around the detail of the party itself: the alcohol is flowing, Demis Roussos is on the record player and the cheese and pineapple cocktail sticks are ready.
Written by Mike Leigh, this production presents a sharply observed portrait of suburban life, with the action unfolding as an awkward social occasion becomes increasingly uncomfortable for everyone involved.
