My Neighbour Totoro is now playing at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in London’s West End. This stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s 1988 animated feature film follows one extraordinary summer in the lives of sisters Satsuki and Mei, as it explores childhood, imagination and fantasy.
Brought to the stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company in collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV, and adapted by Tom Morton-Smith, the production has won six Olivier Awards. Executive Producer Joe Hisaishi is also part of the creative team behind this staging.
The show has been described as a tender and beautiful production, and features puppets, including some large-scale puppets that interact in the audience space, alongside live music and sound effects that can be loud at times.
Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes, including a 20 minute interval.
Age guidance: recommended for ages 6+. The production is not suitable for children under 6 years of age, including babes in arms, and children under 4 years of age, including babes in arms, will not be admitted into the auditorium. Children must occupy their own seats throughout the performance, and all children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over, seated with them for the duration of the visit. All persons entering the theatre, regardless of age, must have a valid ticket.
Seating: single seats cannot be left in a row when booking. The show also contains themes of an ill parent in hospital, and some moments may be loud or possibly scary for younger children.
