The Seven Deadly Sins / The Human Voice at The Arches, London brings together two operas that centre on one woman’s emotional journey. Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s The Seven Deadly Sins is a sharp satire of ambition and self-betrayal, following Anna on a seven-year odyssey through the cities of America as her family sends her to earn money for a house back home.
Francis Poulenc and Jean Cocteau’s The Human Voice unfolds through a single, unbroken phone call that becomes a last conversation with a former lover. Performed together, the two works trace a continuous portrait of a woman under pressure, moving from an American road journey to the silences of a single phone line.
