The Seven Deadly Sins / The Human Voice at The Arches, London brings together two one-woman operas in a single evening. The Seven Deadly Sins, with music by Kurt Weill and libretto by Bertolt Brecht, follows Anna on a seven-year journey through American cities as she is sent to earn money for a house back home. The Human Voice, with music by Francis Poulenc and libretto by Jean Cocteau, centres on Elle, alone in her apartment, as a phone call with a former lover turns into a final conversation.
Seen together, the works create a continuous portrait of a woman under pressure, moving from Weill and Brecht’s satire of ambition and self-betrayal to Poulenc and Cocteau’s intimate account of loss and separation. The music shifts from Weimar cabaret and 1930s American jazz to a score that follows the broken rhythm of speech.
10 performances only.
