The Seven Deadly Sins / The Human Voice at The Arches, London brings together two one-woman operas: Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s The Seven Deadly Sins, and Francis Poulenc and Jean Cocteau’s The Human Voice.
The Seven Deadly Sins follows Anna, split into two halves of one soul, on a seven-year journey through cities in America as her family sends her to earn money for a house back home. The Human Voice centres on Elle, alone in her apartment, as a single phone call from her former lover unfolds into the last conversation of a love affair.
Weill’s score draws on Weimar cabaret and 1930s American jazz, while Poulenc’s music follows the broken rhythm of speech. Seen together, the operas form a continuous portrait of a woman pushed to her limits.
Key facts: 10 performances only. The programme pairs two operas in one evening: The Seven Deadly Sins and The Human Voice.
