Franz & Marie at The Arches, London is a stage adaptation of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck. Set in the twisted world of late 19th Century European folklore, it follows Franz Woyzeck, a soldier stationed at an isolated outpost after front-line action, as nightmares and hallucinations blur the line between reality and trauma.
The story centres on Franz’s devotion to Marie and their baby, Georgie. Unable to take leave during the war, he and Marie have not been able to marry, and Franz is determined to provide for his family. The piece has been reimagined as a musical with Indie Raw Folk and a 14-strong cast of actor-musicians.
Originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom, Franz & Marie was created by members of The Singing Loins and adapted for the stage by Teresa Howard from the book and lyrics by Chris Broderick. It is directed by Michael Oakley.
