About Franz & Marie

Franz & Marie at The Arches, London, is a stage adaptation of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, set in a late 19th-century European folklore world. The story follows Franz Woyzeck, a soldier stationed at an isolated outpost after front-line action, as he struggles with nightmares, fire-filled hallucinations and the effects of trauma.

At the centre of the show is Franz’s relationship with Marie and their baby, Georgie. Forbidden leave during the war means they have not been able to marry, and the story focuses on his efforts to care for them while living through the pressure of military life. The production uses music described as Indie Raw Folk and is performed by a 14-strong cast of actor-musicians.

Originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom and adapted from a Singing Loins show, Franz & Marie is directed by Michael Oakley. The stage adaptation is by Teresa Howard, based on the book and lyrics by Chris Broderick, with music by Rob Shepherd and Chris Broderick, and additional arrangements, orchestrations and music by Steven Edis.
