Franz & Marie at Charing Cross Theatre, The Arches, London, is a new musical inspired by Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck. With book and lyrics by Chris Broderick, a new adaptation by Teresa Howard, and music by Rob Shepherd and Chris Broderick, it reworks a classic German tragedy through a contemporary lens.
The production is described as a visceral story set in late 19th-century European folklore, following Franz Woyzeck, his partner Marie and their baby, Georgie. It explores class prejudice and toxic masculinity, and combines the source material with dark humour and Indie Raw Folk. It was originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom and created with members of The Singing Loins.
For Charing Cross Theatre in 2026, the piece has been reimagined with a 14-strong cast of actor-musicians. It is directed by Michael Oakley, with choreography by Ben Wright, lighting design by Christopher Nairne, sound design by Andrew Johnson and Oscar Cotran, and design by Bretta Gerecke.
