Franz & Marie at Charing Cross Theatre is a new musical inspired by Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, with book and lyrics by Chris Broderick and a new adaptation by Teresa Howard. It features music by Rob Shepherd and Chris Broderick, with additional music, arrangements and orchestrations by Steven Edis.
The production reimagines Büchner’s tragedy with a 14-strong cast of actor-musicians and is set in the world of late 19th-century European folklore. The story follows Franz Woyzeck, his girlfriend Marie and their baby, Georgie, as themes of class prejudice, toxic masculinity and dark humour run through the drama.
Originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom and created by key members of The Singing Loins, Franz & Marie is directed by Michael Oakley and produced for Charing Cross Theatre Productions Limited.
