Franz & Marie at Charing Cross Theatre is a new musical inspired by Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck. With book and lyrics by Chris Broderick, a new adaptation by Teresa Howard, and music by Rob Shepherd and Chris Broderick, it presents the story in a revised stage version for this venue.
The production was originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company ACOM and created by members of the Kentish underground cult band The Singing Loins. This Charing Cross Theatre production also includes additional music, arrangements and orchestrations by Steven Edis, and is directed by Michael Oakley.
Set in late 19th-century European folklore, the musical centres on Franz Woyzeck, a soldier returning from the front line and living with nightmares and hallucinations, and Marie, the partner he is trying to support. The story explores class prejudice, toxic masculinity and dark humour.
Key facts: Runs from Monday 28 September to Saturday 14 November, with a press performance on Monday 5 October. The production features a 14-strong cast of actor-musicians.
