Ivanov at Bridge Theatre is Simon Stone's contemporary take on Chekhov's comic drama. It follows Nikolai, a man who seems to have a successful career and a settled marriage, but who has forgotten how to be happy. Debts are building, his wife has recently been ill, and he is trying to understand why life feels as if it is coming apart.
The story moves towards a party at the Lebedevs', where Nikolai is forced to face whether he can hold together his marriage, his work and his sense of purpose at the same time. The production is created with the same team that brought The Lady from the Sea to the stage.
Chekhov's play is presented here as a modern comic drama about mid-life uncertainty, strain and the pressure of keeping everything in balance.
