Ivanov at the Bridge Theatre, 3 Potters Fields Park, London SE1 2SG, is Simon Stone’s contemporary staging of Chekhov’s comic drama. It follows Nikolai, a man who seems to have the life he should want, but has lost his sense of happiness and certainty.
He has a successful career and a wife he describes as perfect, but debt is mounting and her unexplained illnesses have added to the strain. As a party at the Lebedevs’ draws near, the play tracks his attempt to keep his marriage, work and sense of self from falling apart.
Stone brings Chekhov’s keenly observed story into the contemporary world, with the same creative team that brought The Lady from the Sea to life.
