This workshop will be based on the rhythm Dunungbe, one of the Dounounba family of rhythms originating from the Hamana region of Guinea. The support rhythms are relatively quick to learn and simple to play, leaving plenty of scope for players to focus on the quality of note articulation and differentiation between slaps and tones.
When played by a full ensemble, Dunungbe has an unusual, almost hypnotic quality. It also offers plenty of scope for soloing. The second half of this workshop will be an opportunity for enthusiastic first-timers to experiment with soloing with some gentle but not prescriptive guidance. Structured creativity will be the order of the day!
If you do not have your own drum there are a limited set of workshop drums for hire. Advance booking is strongly advised to reserve the hire of a djembe.
