Brighton Sundae w/ Matthew Herbert (DJ set)
Brighton Sundae is back at Patterns after our summer break... and we're returning with an absolute corker.
Making a rare DJ appearance in Brighton, our guest for September is the legendary composer, artist, producer and DJ Matthew Herbert.
Matthew Herbert has been at the cutting edge of creativity for multiple decades, rewriting the rules of electronic music and production. He's made music out of fast food wrappers, the sewers beneath fleet street, a bomb exploding in Libya, an orgasm, someone swimming in the English channel, a tank driving over a meal made for Tony Blair, 20,000 dogs, 245 shops in a shopping centre and thousands of other noises.
He's made over 30 albums including One Pig, which sampled sounds from each month of the life of a single pig, Around The House, a jazz-tinged deep-house record made from the sounds of household objects and designed to be listened to at home, and his seminal 2001 album Bodily Functions, which featured sounds generated by manipulating human hair and skin, body parts, internal organs and the sounds of laser eye surgery.
He's received multiple Ivor Novello nominations (including an award for innovation in 2023) and written a book called The Music which is a description of an album he'll never make. He's written scores for Oscar-winning films (A Fantastic Woman), National Theatre productions and TV series (Noughts and Crosses, The Responder). And he's performed with his own 21-piece big band and 100-piece choir, at venues all over the world from the Sydney Opera House to the Hollywood Bowl.
His DJ sets are always full of surprises, often featuring some of his own remixes - as a remixer, he's worked with everyone from Depeche Mode, Moloko, and Bjork, to Ennio Morricone, Serge Gainsbourg, Quincy Jones and Mahler.
Support comes from the ever-reliable D-Novo and Mr Dan (1BTN/Brighton Sundae residents).
Join us early for 'The Sundae Sermon' - a Q&A with Matthew Herbert.
Then from 2-8pm, we dance.
See you on the floor.
