About

Spanish Castles — Biography

Spanish Castles emerge from the long creative arc of songwriter James Summerfield, bringing together decades of experience with a renewed collaborative energy. Formed following the release of 2023’s Them, the band builds on deep-rooted Americana influences while embracing a broader sonic palette — pairing evocative storytelling with expansive, modern production.

It has been over twenty years since Summerfield’s debut album Hailah, Hailah first introduced his grainy, lo-fi alt-country sound — often compared to early Jason Molina or Will Oldham. While those Americana roots remain present, Spanish Castles represent a significant evolution: sharper songwriting, richer arrangements, and a collective approach that pushes the music far beyond its origins.

History

Summerfield first emerged on the UK independent scene as a founding member of Buick 6, later renamed The Toques. The band recorded two John Peel Sessions and secured management with the Sanctuary Management Group. In 2002, negotiations with Gravity BMG suggested a breakthrough moment, but the Zomba label merger abruptly halted funding. The setback led to a period of disillusionment and ultimately prompted Summerfield to pursue a solo career, seeking greater creative and administrative control.

Across six studio albums and two live EPs, he established a reputation as one of the UK’s most distinctive Americana voices, sharing stages with artists including Alasdair Roberts, Richmond Fontaine, John Renbourn, Scott Matthews, Pete Yorn and Joanna Newsom.

His catalogue traces a wide emotional and stylistic range. Hailah, Hailah (2003) evoked the haunted minimalism of Songs: Ohia, while the bluegrass-leaning Paint the Road (2005) became his most commercially successful release, earning praise from MOJO and UNCUT. Later work explored darker terrain: Count to 10 and Start Again, released via Commercially Inviable Records, reflected themes of loss and heartbreak following his divorce.

Between the alt-country releases 2 Brothers Leave Home (2015) and Doubt (2018) — the latter featuring Kiwi actor, writer and singer Immi Paterson — Summerfield collaborated on the experimental spoken-word project Analogue Tales: Sounds From Arden. The record combined local poet Darren Cannan’s work with atmospheric soundscapes narrated by notable Midlands voices including Ranking Roger (The Beat), Paul Murphy (The Destroyers), broadcaster Robin Valk, authors Catherine O’Flynn and Mike Gayle, and Marjorie Summerfield. The project was also published as a paperback companion volume.

Spanish Castles

Released in 2023, Them marked a turning point. Recorded with musicians who would soon become Spanish Castles, the album hinted at a broader collaborative identity. Its contrasts — from the Mark Linkous-inspired experimentalism of “Roman” and “Alice” to the sunlit West Coast warmth of “Woody” and “Sally” — established a sound that was deliberately unpredictable.

Now working on their debut album as a fully realised band, Spanish Castles continue to develop their distinctive blend of Americana textures, melodic immediacy and exploratory production.

The Scotsman — “One of the finest exponents of moss-hung backwoods Americana you’ll find in the UK.”
