La Belle et La Bete (1946) | “Let me speak four truly magic words, childhood’s Open Sesame, Once upon a time…” - Jean Cocteau, opening credits.
Before Disney’s Beauty and the Beast there was La Belle et La Bete by French poet and filmmaker Jean Cocteau. The surrealist romantic fantasy film depicts a fairytale in which Belle’s father is sentenced to death for picking a rose from the Beast’s garden. Belle offers to take her father’s place and the Beast falls in love with her.
Long before animation, the film consisted of practical effects and imaginative camera work to depict the enchantment in the story including magic mirrors, diamond tears, floating candelabras and glittery horses. All this is set to the backdrop of a gothic castle and flamboyant costumes made from fabric scraps available after the war.
This is a unique idea for a valentines night out and a rare chance to catch a screening of this film. You won’t find this on Netflix.
