About

MOGHUL MOUTH
A Celebration of South Asian Music, Poetry & Cuisine
Fletchers Bar, Kings Heath - April 2nd

Moghul Mouth is a new cultural gathering honouring the richness of South Asian sound, spoken word and flavour. It's a concert and Supper Club in one, hosted by award-winning chefs and internationally acclaimed musicians and poets.

This month we present Birmingham's own Qasim Shah performing ancient Ragas and poems alongside compare and poet Nafeesa.

Throughout the performances you'll be continually served a plethora of Indian-inspired thali dishes by Bristol's award-winning chef Kimberly Prado, designed for abundance and pleasure. The three courses journey with the music and words to truly transport and delight guests. Food is served and shared on banana leaves. Whether you come alone or with friends you'll be sure to leave full and inspired!!

Your Artists:

Qasim Shah

Qasim is a Birmingham-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and poet with a focus on Indo-Persian classical and folk music. His practice centres on voice, Sitar, Surbahar, Harmonium and Surmandal. He brings these instruments together in a style that blends traditional raga-based improvisation with his own melodic ideas and compositions. Qasim performs in Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, Brij Bhasha, Sanskrit and Saraiki, drawing on the lyrical traditions he grew up with and continues to develop through performance.

His work spans khayal, thumri and light classical forms, but he approaches them in an open, accessible way that suits intimate gatherings as much as formal settings. Qasim is also a poet and writer, and this influences the storytelling aspect of his music in English, giving his performances a personal tone without taking them away from their classical foundations.

Over the past year he has been steadily refining his sound, building a set of pieces that combine improvisation, mood and melody. He now performs at community events, small concerts and creative nights across the city.

At Moghul Mouth, Qasim presents a warm, unfussy set built around voice, strings and subtle improvisation - music intended to complement the atmosphere of good food, conversation and a relaxed Thursday evening.

Kimberly Prado

Kimberly De Portela E Prado is a Bristol-based food artist and social entrepreneur. She is the founding Director of Houria CIC, an award-winning catering company that centralises the cuisines and stories of women survivors of modern slavery from Africa and the middle-east. Her cooking career has taken her across the globe, including India, North and West Africa where she's had the privilege of learning and hosting feasts great and small. This Moghul Mouth will showcase some of Kimberly's inherited recipes with a contemporary twist on thali classics.
