Twitch20: Etienne De Crecy
We continue our 20 years of Twitch celebrations with a true legend and pioneer of the French House sound, Etienne De Crecy!
Best know for his legendary Superdiscount and Motorbass releases, De Crecy has been an integral figure in developing the famous French sound within electronic music.
Crécy was born in Lyon, but moved to Versailles from Marseille in the mid-1980s, attending the same Jules Ferry college as Airand Alex Gopher, with whom he later created the Solid label. He then worked in Paris as a sound engineer at studio +XXX ("plus thirty") where he met Philippe Zdar of Cassius, with whom he worked as Motorbass for the album Pansoul,[1] a preview of what would be his first solo album, Super Discount, released in 1996, with Air, Alex Gopher and other French artists on Solid. De Crécy has been involved in various music projects where he worked as a producer.
Super Discount, Etienne de Crécy’s solo but collaborative project, was both a critical and commercial success when its first volume was released in 1997. It showcased a wave of emerging talents, including Air (whose very first song, Modulor Mix in 1995, had been mixed and produced by De Crécy) and Alex Gopher.
Following the release of Daft Punk’s Homework, Super Discount showed that something very special was brewing in France; the album’s blend of deep house, jazz, hip-hop and reggae revealed a kaleidoscopic talent. “I’m really proud of Super Discount,” says Étienne de Crécy. “And I think maybe it’s the variety of that album that represents the French Touch. Because the French Touch isn’t really a sound. If you listen to Air and Daft Punk, people said it was French Touch — but their music is really different.”
Étienne de Crécy is also highly respected as a live performer, having pushed the limits of electronic music on his Super Discount, Space Echo and Beats ’n’ Cubes tours. His shows are designed to offer an immersive audiovisual experience: Beats ’n’ Cubes, for example, blends a dazzling aesthetic — six-meter luminous cubes of architectural light — with a dizzyingly intense performance.
Alongside these creations, Étienne de Crécy has also had a long and fruitful career as a DJ, with his funk-fuelled sets and adventurous spirit in demand from Barcelona to Mexico, making him one of the most enduring DJs to come out of the French Touch. And he’s not done.
His recent work with Baxter Dury, son of Ian is special with tracks like Tais Toi and White Coats being mainstays in our bar sets!
After all these years of innovation and success — moving hearts, minds and dance floors — De Crécy still considers himself “a big fan of electronic music.” “Since I’m a DJ, I have to find new music all the time. And every week, I discover a new track, a new sound, a new style,” he concludes. “It’s incredible.” — One could say the same about his career.
