Not just a hangover: How nights out at uni shape who you become

The sticky floors, the late-night anthems, the strangers who become family — uni nights out might end with a sore head, but their impact lasts far longer.

Ahh university. The first taste of freedom in many young adults' lives. A time when you must put on your grown-up pants, separate from the safety of the bosom of your parents and head out into the unknown. When you must learn quickly how to fend for yourself, how to cook, clean, and live like a respectable human being, all while trying to find a balance between studying - like a good, model student should - and partying. And it’s no secret that the uni experience is focused largely on the latter.

From the off, Freshers Week parties run right through the first month of the term, offering the chance to break the ice with your new fellow cohort. They’re also the guide to your new digs, introducing you to the pubs, bars and nightclubs you’ll regularly attend in the place you’ll call home for the next few years. The spaces guaranteed to swallow chunks of your student loan, whether you’re paying to get in or for the pints.

But nights out during Freshers Week and at the hundreds of events and spontaneous sessions that will follow mean more than just going out and getting all rowdy and p*ssed with your pals. Oh, yes, there are far greater and more formative forces at play.

The times spent propped up by your course mates, staggering home as the birds begin to sing, belting out the anthem that immortalised the night between mouthfuls of chips drenched in garlic sauce… these are the experiences that will forge who you become as you transition into adulthood. But it’s that standout track - that banger that dropped just at the right moment - that’s so integral to the process.

Music plays a central role in moulding the person you’ll become later in life, and most aren’t fully aware of its significance. Your first attendance at that club or society you signed up for, those early Freshers’ shindigs, or the first time you visit that independent music spot or club everyone talks about - we’d put money on all these experiences being scored by an artist - a band or a DJ - and it’s the tracks they select which become tied to those initial forays into uni life. The soundtrack to your independence. From there on out, it’s all about discovery.

You might have come from a somewhat sheltered upbringing, living out your youth in a quiet village with not much going on, chasing a wheel down a road with a stick for fun. And then all of a sudden - wham! You’re thrown into a loud and vibrant world of culture and hedonism. It can be quite daunting, but embrace it with both hands. Take the ride, soak up all your new locale has to offer, and we guarantee your eyes and ears will be opened to scenes and sounds the likes they’ve never known before.

Found yourself studying in Bristol? Fully immerse yourself in the city’s drum and bassscene and visit some of the UK’s best nightclubs. Landed in Manchester? The city is a hotspot for indie music culture. Choose from a long list of live gigs happening in iconic music venues all year round. And then there’s Leeds - a high-ranking night out for fans of house and techno, with regular performances from world-renowned electronic acts.

Whether you’re in London, Birmingham, Edinburgh or Cardiff - the list could go on and on - there’s always going to be a venue with a sticky floor or a sweaty nightclub where you can discover new music, meet your tribe and hone your own, individual taste.

There’ll be nights out that go far beyond the cliche narrative of “out on the p*ss”. You’ll connect with strangers on dancefloors at ungodly hours. Strangers who’ll turn into your chosen family; your brothers and sisters in arms, enduring the ups and downs of university right by your side. Heck, some of them might even become love interests, and who knows where that could lead. You’ll express yourself like never before, try new things, take risks, and test out different sounds and subcultures, growing in confidence as you journey along the path to finding your true self. These transcendental nights may feel fleeting, but their impact lasts a lifetime.

Embrace all the extracurricular pleasures of uni life, and, come your graduation, you’ll leave with a memory tank full of tales and anecdotes that you’ll be able to reminisce upon for decades to come. Tales that you might even one day be able to tell your own kids as they prepare to head off to university themselves - with some redactions, of course. And when those special, memory-loaded tracks of those unforgettable nights prick your ears years down the line, you’ll find yourself transported back, romanticising about your time as an undergraduate.

People call uni a doss, just one long knees-up, with little thought given to the degree itself. But its real value lies beyond academia. It’s in the people you meet, the music that lingers, and the lasting mark it leaves on who you become.
