Today marks a sad day for the neo-soul and R&B community as pioneer D'Angelo has passed away age of 51. The singer, originally named Michael Eugene Archer, died on Tuesday morning at his home in New York after privately suffering from pancreatic cancer.

His family confirmed the news to Variety, saying: "The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life … After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025."

Many fans, friends, and collaborators came to social media to express their condolences and pay their respects, including Jill Scott, fellow R&B singer Bryan Cox, Beyoncé, Nile Rodgers, Missy Elliot, Alchemist and more.

Debuting in 1995 with his breakout album, 'Brown Sugar', D'Angelo became a household name in regard to creating soulful R&B, which earned him 3 Grammy nominations, and was certified platinum in the US with estimated sales to date totalling around 1.5-2 million. The singer then came in strong with a huge follow-up album, 'Voodoo' in 2000, which featured the memorable 'How Does It Feel (Untitled)', finally landing him four Grammy Awards,  including Best R&B Album for each.

Father to three children, Morocco Archer and daughter Imani Archer, and Michael D'Angelo Archer II, whom he had with Angie Stone, who passed earlier this year in a car crash. D'Angelo leaves behind a generational legacy that will be remembered in the music industry for years to come.
