Groove School and giving back to Music

The great work of Groove School in London is highlighted by a fundraising event at the Prince of Wales in December, so we had a look at what makes the charity so endearing.

We love a good charity angle here at Skiddle, and when goodwill and music combine it's usually a fantastic chance for everyone to pull together.

Groove School epitomises this combination, with a focus on boosting skills, confidence and self awareness in young people via DJ lessons, a great method of positive empowerment for inner city youth.

They'll be throwing a fundraising event at the Prince of Wales in Brixton on Friday 5th December, and ahead of that we asked them to explain int heir own words what the initiative was about:

"For the last three and half years, we at Grooveschool have hosted a series of free DJ and Music Technology sessions, for local young people in South London. Practitioners voluntarily giving their time and contributing advice and skills.

The essence of the workshops is to teach children how to compile a DJ set which includes their own works, be it sounds, loops or tracks.  Grooveschool provide opportunities for each young person to play at live events and on radio shows. These workshops aim to generate momentum and energy, ideas and creativity through music.

The free programmes encourage young people from poorer backgrounds to get involved, and all children gain and build confidence, self awareness and worth, whilst another aim of Grooveschool is to train potential advisers/tutors to become a sustainable project for communities.

We have had several fundraising parties over the years and it was in looking for a venue for this years collaboration with WLV (We Love Vinyl) that we were invited by the-POW Prince of Wales in Brixton to do our main one there.

With discussions to also run a program of workshops in the daytime at the venue, it was also suggested that we host one of the rooms at the-POW’s weekly Brixton Boogaloo promotion, thus having a platform to help raise the profile.

Grooveschool believe we now have foundations in place to setup similar projects in various locations, and so we’re now expressing this to the wider DJ community, feeling this is the right time to do so.

And so many established DJs are investing their valuable time to concentrate solely on raising charitable funds on the 5th December. All of the ticket sales and donations from the evening will go directly towards the various community projects for young people provided by Grooveschool."
