Biography

PAT DAM SMYTH’S debut album ‘The Great Divide’ was hailed as a modern masterpiece in his native Northern Ireland and received critical acclaim further afield from The Independent, Q magazine, Hotpress Magazine, Irish Times, Rock Italia, BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 music to name but a few. Born and raised on a farm in Northern Ireland from Irish and Greek roots he moved to London, via Dublin, Liverpool, Athens and Los Angeles. His music falls somewhere between John Grant, Leonard Cohen and Father John Misty, while early previews of the forthcoming second album have been garnering comparisons to Nick Cave, Beck and Pink Floyd for good measure. His ability to distill his raw authenticity into a mixture of world weary low vocals, and those soul-searingly high moments is winning him an army of fans both inside the industry and out. A leading light in a new wave of exciting Northern Irish artists, Pat is already being cited as an influence by his peers; as well as having the support of local legends Ash, who he opened for at recent London shows at Scala.

He has just completed a successfully overfunded PledgeMusic campaign bringing fans together to power the new album, and was unanimously awarded the top PledgeMusic/Help Musicians UK award at the end of 2015. For the new record Pat has formed a formidable partnership with drummer/producer Chris McComish. The record was tracked live to tape at Analogue Catalogue in his native Northern Ireland, and finished off in London between 50:50 studios and Masterchord, and was produced by Chris and engineer/producer Dougal Lott (The Leisure Society, Jonathan Jeremiah, Alabama Shakes). Joined by Tim Abbey on Bass, the band have forged a live show that is blowing away audiences across UK and Europe - including a sold out series of shows in London, Italy and Germany as well as a triumphant industry show at May’s Great Escape in Brighton. While The Great Divide clearly stands the test of time, the as-yet-untitled new album shows a maturity of songwriting and production that could place Pat into that next level of artists, creating a space around the vocal and a gravitas that many lesser artists can only dream of. The new album is due for release in early 2017.
