Biography

Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman is known for her passionate performances, interesting programs and communicative qualities on stage. She recently stepped in on short notice for a very successful tour with the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer with concerts in Amsterdam, Budapest, Montréal and New York. In the words of the New York Times, “…with Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman bringing refined beauty and character to the solo part of the Bernstein [Serenade]…the concert was nothing short of revelatory.” Important highlights this spring include the performance of the complete solo works by Bach at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, as well as playing and conducting the Beethoven Concerto at the Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra.

Other hallmarks of Ms. Ferschtman’s 2012/2013 season are debuts with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Bremen Philharmonic, Essen Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Weimar and the Symphony Orchestra of Flanders, as well as re-invitations to the Concertgebouw and the Malaysian Philharmonic.

Worldwide appearances include the Bergen Philharmonic, Malaysian Philharmonic, Malmö Symphony, Orchestre National de Belgique, Radio Symphony Orchestra of Prague, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, Yomiuri Nippon Orchestra, as well as virtually every orchestra in the Netherlands, including numerous appearances with the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Among the conductors with whom she has collaborated are Stephan Blunier, Martyn Brabbins, Frans Bruggen, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Iván Fischer, Claus Peter Flor, Neeme Järvi, the late Yakov Kreizberg, Jun Märkl, Ludovic Morlot, Gianandrea Noseda, Arild Remmereit, Leonard Slatkin, Jac van Steen, Otto Tausk, Christian Vásquez, Jan Willem de Vriend and Jaap van Zweden.

An avid chamber musician, Liza Ferschtman collaborates regularly with Jonathan Biss, Alisa Weilerstein, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Nobuko Imai, Lars Anders Tomter, Christian Poltera, and counts as her duo partners, pianists Enrico Pace and Inon Barnatan. She has performed at venues such as Alice Tully Hall in New York and the Library of Congress in Washington, as well as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Wigmore Hall in London. Since 2007, Ms. Ferschtman has been the artistic director of the Delft Chamber Music Festival. During her tenure, the festival has become widely renowned for its adventurous programming and dynamic performances by artists from around the globe.

Ms. Ferschtman's recording of the Beethoven Concerto and Romances was reviewed with great critical acclaim, as were other recordings with concertos by Dvo?ák and Röntgen, solo works by Bach and Ysaÿe, and duo works by Beethoven and Schubert. Her next CD will include solo works by Bach, Biber, Bartók and Berio.

The daughter of Russian musicians, Liza Ferschtman began playing the violin at the age of 5. One of her earliest important influences was a close family friend, violinist Philipp Hirschhorn. She has studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Herman Krebbers and at the Curtis Institute with Ida Kavafian. In 2006 she received the Dutch Music Prize, the highest accolade awarded to a musician in the Netherlands.
