Liverpool Christmas guide
With great Christmas shopping at its multi million pound Liverpool One development, hundreds of bars and restaurants serving exciting Christmas fayre and a global reputation for nightlife and clubbing, Liverpool certainly does sparkle brightly on the UK Christmas map. Don't forget to visit the Christmas markets too, which this year run from the 24th November to 22nd December. With lots of stalls and traders from all over the world selling a range of traditional gifts and toys, as well as good food to enjoy, it's not to be missed!
New Year's Eve in Liverpool
As one of the country's most famous clubbing cities, Liverpool certainly knows how to party. Well, this is after all the city that spawned one of the biggest clubbing brands in the world; Cream. Liverpudlians certainly like a knees up, and as such there's no end to the festivities unfolding in the city on New Year's Eve. F
Liverpool fresher's week guide
A huge city with a community feel, Liverpool is famed for its friendly residents, rich maritime heritage and of course... *that* band. It's also a fantastically student friendly city, with a relatively compact centre, plenty of cultural opportunities and of course a thriving nightlife that boasts Cream and mUmU amongst its residents. Liverpool sport guide
It’s important to get registered with a local, term time doctor in the first week of university. Student accommodation is well known for its propensity to sniffles and bugs in the first few weeks, so it’s best to be prepared. Liverpool University offers an excellent GP service on campus, which is ideal for a term time consultant (you can register here as a student of any of Liverpool’s universities). Should you visit the Freshers fairs dotted around the city, you will also be in the receipt of condoms, which we here at Skiddle strongly recommend employing, should you engage in sexual activity. There’s also a sexual health service available at the Royal Liverpool hospital’s GUM clinic, should you need to get checked out, where appointments are not necessary. There is also a walk-in centre on Great Charlotte St for minor ailments/injuries. F
Liverpool travel
The city centre of Liverpool is quite small, so can certainly be negotiated on foot, but for those trips outside of the city, or for your commute from accommodation outside of the city, public transport will be required. B
Attractions
Museums – Maritime & Slavery Museum Liverpool’s proud maritime history is celebrated in this must-see voyage into the past, aptly located on the docks. Housed in the museum are many collections associated with nautical archeology and the history of one of the world’s oldest ports. The real highlight is located within the same building, the Slavery Museum, which is an eye-opening delve into the details of atrocities suffered by so many slaves brought over from Africa and their quest for freedom. Video, objects and exhibitions bring to life the real horror that surrounds slavery, one of the western world’s most shameful chapters in recent history. All museums are free in Liverpool, including the World Museum and the National Conservation Centre, which both have collections worth seeing, perfect money saving, not-to-mention, educational days out. Liverpool shopping
The city invested £920m in its new shopping development, Liverpool One in 2008 and this plays host to over 160 stores and services including many of the leading names in retail; such as: HMV, Topshop, American Apparel, Urban Outfitters and Debenhams. Liverpool One also features a 14 screen Odeon cinema and many of the nation's favourite restaurant chains (Nandos, Pizza Hut, Gormet Burger Kitchen etc). Incidentally, this new retail haven is also an ideal spot to secure a Christmas temp job for the hard-up fresher. If you prefer your shopping a little off the beaten track, Liverpool is again not shy of options. Bold Street is largely pedestrianised and runs from St Lukes (the bombed-out church) to Church Street and is a delightful combination of independent shops, record stores and cafes. The Bluecoat centre on School Lane also houses Landbaby and Purlesque, two of the best examples of local handicraft talents making their intricate goods available to buy. Perfect for an afternoon of leisurely browsing. If you're looking to rid yourself of your student loan early-doors, then the Met Quarter will surely oblige. Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, and Flannels all call this exclusive Whitechapel mall home. Opposite from this destroyer of worlds are vintage clothes shops, Flashback Boutique and Pop Boutique. Keep your eyes peeled for Flashback Boutique's legendary “Fill a Bag for a Tenner” offer in the first few weeks of university. This could be your first taste of the dreaded food shop and luckily it's not too daunting an experience in Liverpool with a supermarket seemingly around every corner. Tesco's silent occupation of the UK shows no sign of abating, with Liverpool's city centre now having no less than 7 (SEVEN!) stores of varying sizes. There are a few fresh fruit and vegetable markets that appear dotted around the city centre Monday – Saturday, as well as a Mattas world food store on Bold Street, if you'd rather not aid Tesco's rise. If you drive and fancy getting all your food shopping sorted for the month ahead, then there's an Asda on Smithdown Road (a five minute drive from the city centre) that will provide all of the frozen pizzas/oven chips/pot noodles required to survive until Christmas.
Restaurants
Liverpool has never had it so good when it comes to eating out on a budget, with a city centre packed with reasonably priced restaurants; ideal for eating out while getting to know new friends. Here are our pick of the best: C
Nightlife
Unlike neighboring Manchester, you don’t need to don hiking boots to sample Liverpool’s infamous nightlife. Liverpool’s relatively small city centre makes for an ideal break from the books with new friends as there's clubs and bars on every corner. LWeather data provided by weather.com
