The city centre of Liverpool is quite small, so can certainly be negotiated on foot, but for those trips outside of the city, or for your commute from accommodation outside of the city, public transport will be required.
Bus
Liverpool city centre is served by two bus terminals: Paradise Street Interchange and Queens Square Bus Station. There are two main firms that provide the buses, Arriva and Stagecoach. A couple of night services are available to a limited number of destinations, but are charged at inflated fees, meaning a taxi is still probably your best bet. A student fare during the day is typically £1.50, but it can vary from provider to provider. If you are regularly commuting to the city centre for a nearby suburb, a student saver might be just the ticket for you. It costs £203 for a two-term ticket for unlimited use, or £108 for a single term from the Arriva website.

Train
Liverpool city centre has two train stations: Liverpool Central and Liverpool Lime Street. Liverpool Central connects Liverpool to the rest of Merseyside, including Edge Hill, Chester, Ormskirk, Kirkby, Aigburth and Hunts Cross. A saveway ticket can save money if you are a heavy user of the train service, or a standard young person’s railcard can be used to purchase tickets. Liverpool Lime Street station connects Liverpool with the rest of the UK and boasts a fast line connection with London Euston where the journey time is just a little over two hours. Regular services to Manchester are also in operation.

Coach
If you’re looking to cover long distances around the UK without spending a fortune, the coach station on Norton Street might be your best bet. Booking the National Express services in advance can make for a huge saving with funfares available for £5 trips to London or £2 to Manchester if you get in there early enough. Just make sure you pack a book or 2 for that London journey.
