Sheffield fresher's week guide
Congratulations on choosing to study at Sheffield! With a pulsing nightlife, a compact city centre and a reputation as the greenest city in England (get any ideas of grim industrial landscapes out of your mind right now!), Sheffield is a fantastic place to spend your student years. W
Sheffield sport guide
Unfortunately after living in Sheffield for about a week, the simple but horrifying error of your decision to move to this city will reveal itself. Some numpty decided to build Sheffield at the point where seven separate hills converge (where the city centre redevelopment gets its name from as you ask) and as a result even a five minute walk can leave you dripping with sweat and weeping uncontrollably on the pavement. T
Sheffield travel
Although Sheffield is a large city, the public transport system means getting about is as easy as maxing out your overdraft is. With a large train station near the city centre, a tram system and extensive bus routes catering for both universities, if you can be bothered going to your 9 o’clock lectures then you can easily roll out of bed 10 minutes before and still get there with plenty of time to spare. Probably. Also if you travel on Stagecoach buses any single journey is just 50p with a student card so getting to where you need to be shouldn’t hit your wallet too badly, leaving you with more money to spend on the fun things! Sheffield shopping
If you’re struggling to spend all your student loan on nights out then you’ll be glad to know that Sheffield has many options for shopping addicts. The city centre’s Fargate and High Street has all the shops you would hope for in a large city – including of course the one stop student fashion fix that is Primark. The more studenty Eccleshall Road a
Restaurants
There are loads of different places to eat out in Sheffield. Most friendly to a student budget are probably found on Division Street and West Street, including Wokmania (all you can eat Chinese for under £5 at lunch time), a Nando’s, Pizza Express (vouchers, anyone?), Varsity, and The Cavendish – a ‘Scream’ pub where you’ll find cheap and cheerful pub food including beer and a burger for £3.50. The leafy, cosmopolitan Eccleshall Road is also a great place to go for lunch or dinner,
Nightlife
Whether you prefer to sip a quiet pint in a dusty pub or rave until the early hours, Sheffield’s nightlife can offer something for pretty much every taste. Both Uni and Hallam host different club nights most days of the week. These cater for a variety of musical tastes and budgets, such as Sheffield Student’s Union’s Tuesday Club which plays drum & bass, or Hallam’s Pounded, which is on a Monday and will cost you just (you guessed it) a pound to get in - with many drinks also available for a quid. bars Leaving the unis behind, Ecclesall Road is a student favourite. With a lot of Hallam’s accommodation close by, the street features a wide variety of bars and pubWeather data provided by weather.com
