229 is a multi-purpose entertainments venue which first opened its doors in 1965 as part of International Students House (ISH). The Charity opened essentially as an accommodation centre supporting British and overseas students whilst they studied at different Universities in London. Since then the venue has played host to, many gigs, awards ceremonies, club nights, weekend festivals and music related events. All profit is ploughed back into the Charity and helps funds our Scholarship programmes for students from less advantaged countries.

In April 2007 after a major refurbishment and a technical overhaul, 229 was launched as a dedicated live music and entertainments venue and in its early days, hosted the likes of The Beta Band, The Sneaker Pimps, Razorlight, Biffy Clyro, The Twang, The Noisettes, The Duke Spirit and The Mystery Jets.

In 2008, Island Records showcased Florence and the Machine in the smaller Venue 2 and a year later she won her first Brit Award. Likewise in 2010, we hosted Tinie Tempah, in what was a special gig for his label, friends and family and that night he went to number one in the download charts, with â€˜Pass Outâ€™. A year later he also won a Brit!

Since those early years some of the other artists who have played at 229 to date include: Example, Friendly Fires, Foals, Gnarls Barkley, The Magic Numbers, Primal Scream, Keane, Steve Cropper, The Correspondents, Ill Nino and Steel Panther.

More recently, Chrissie Hynde, Labrinth, Newton Faulkner, Seasick Steve and James Arthur have all performed in the smaller Venue 2 space (150 capacity). Kings of Leon launched their 2016 album, â€˜Wallsâ€™ and Paul Weller warmed up for his World Tour in 2017. Both events took place in our main Venue 1, 620 capacity room.

In 2013 we hosted two celebratory events in honor of Nigerian singer/political figure Fela Kuti. This fantastic Afro Beats event also featured guest artists including legendary drummers, Tony Allen and Ginger Baker, plus Shingai Shoniwa of the Noisettes.

229 is becoming well respected for its cultural diversity in hosting acts from all over the world and we have continued to develop working relationships with promoters from all over Europe and beyond. In particular we host regular nights promoting the top artists from Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
We also hosted some acts from further afield including; Bamboo, a legend from the Philippines, Josh from Pakistan and also Egyptian band, Cairokee.

In 2016 we Lebanese band Mashrou Leila, played their first ever London show, plus Iranian artist Shahin Najafi, also performed in the UK for the first time.

As well as working with many leading independent and national promoters, 229 runs its own promotions and supports grassroots music striving to give young and up and coming artists and bands a platform to perform and promote their music.

229 runs with D&B PA across all venues and we have invested significantly in lighting and production over recent years, including newly renovated back stage dressing rooms, green room and production facilities.

229 is available for hire and its multi-faceted layout and extensive technical capabilities means it is capable of handling a wide range of events including: live music gigs, club nights, private corporate events, live comedy nights, fashion shows, filming & photo shoots, gala dinners and radio shows plus much more.

Both V1 & V2 can run independently or together as one, and with good production facilities and a friendly, hard working team of staff, we can provide end-to-end delivery of a wide range of events and comprehensive event management.

Our location in Central London, excellent sound and production facilities make 229 one of the leading small â€“ medium sized venues in the UK.

229 THE VENUE

KOKO began life as The Camden Theatre and was opened on Boxing Day 1900 by the famous actress Ellen Terry. In 1909 the theatre was renamed The Camden Hippodrome and was a variety theatre where Charlie Chaplin regularly performed.
The venue became a proper cinema in 1913 and in 1928 &#39;Novelty Nights&#39; were introduced on Fridays with up to seven live acts appearing before a film. In 1933 the cinema was wired for sound and free Christmas performances were given to the local children.

The cinema closed in 1940 and for some 20 years from 1945 the building became a BBC Theatre. Here they recorded shows such as the famous Goon Show, and &#39;Rhythm and Blues&#39;, which featured a performance from the Rolling Stones.

In 1970 the venue was reincarnated as The Music Machine, it found a place at the heart of Punk and played host to some of the decade&#39;s most legendary shows. Both the Sex Pistols and Iron Maiden performed live, and it was home to The Clash for a momentous 4 day residency in the summer of &#39;78.

In 1982 the Camden Palace was born and The New Romantic scene had found its home. The venue quickly became a hangout for the coolest kids in London, and the world over (Grace Jones used to fly out to party here). The Eighties saw performances from the Eurythmics, the Cure and the first UK show from a rising star known as Madonna. Not forgetting, of course, those Nutty boys of Camden Town - Madness.

The Camden Palace continued to move with the times and in the Nineties was home to a series of dance nights. It closed in February 2004 in much need of some love, care and a refurbishment.

A six month, multi million pound restoration project was undertaken to the singular brief of creating a 21st Century entertainment venue from what was left of the glorious 19th Century building.

Since opening in 2005, some true musical legends have graced KOKO&#39;s stage: Noel Gallagher dropped in for a surprise show with Kasabian and Coldplay held their celeb-filled &#39;X & Y&#39; album launch. Madonna has returned to KOKO since her historic show. The Elton John AIDS Foundation held their star-studded &#39;Move for AIDS&#39; fundraiser here in 2007. Rock N Roll Cinema launched in 2010 with the premiere of the highly-anticipated rock documentary film &#39;Oil City Confidential&#39; and a performance from Wilko Johnson.

2010 saw the birth of KOKO TV with the recording of Channel Four primetime music show KOKO Pop.

The Scala 

Scala is a beautiful multi-purpose venue in the regenerated Kingï¿½s Cross area, on the north side of central London. The building incorporates four main floors and accommodates events for as many as 1,145 people. There are three bars, 2 dance floors and a stage for live performances. There is a cloakroom on the first floor.


Scala hosts regular weekend club nights but is also a very popular venue for live music on week nights. Scalaï¿½s history of live music shows include Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Moby, Super Furry Animals, Chemical Brothers, Kruder + Dorfmeister, The Doves, Dido, Outkast, Lionel Ritchie, Stereophonics, Sophie Ellis Bexter, Suede, Gomez, Elbow, Robbie Williams, The Rapture, Hanoi Rocks, Kelis, Kosheen, Chicane, The Scissors Sisters and Joss Stone.

The Water Rats

In 1999 The Social opened in Little Portland Street. The brain child of a record company whose offshoots included a hugely successful underground club night, The Social was set up with a simple manifesto - to provide great music and better booze to anyone who fancied tripping through the doors.

Nearly 20 years later and still run by the original team who created it - Heavenly Recordings & The Breakfast Group - the bar is an award winning London landmark. Designed by a partnership of David Adjaye and Will Russell (now of Pentagram) with a brief of withstanding nuclear attack or - at the very - the worst that people could chuck at it.

The Social has launched well over a million hugely successful hangovers.

The Roxy Bar is a stylish venue with a great atmosphere and a comfortable interior. An extensive drinks list is available including cocktails, shots and pitchers. The food menu offers a variety of street food.

100 Club&#39;s longevity is due to an open minded music policy which has seen many different musical styles performed at this venue over it&#39;s long history.

The Clubs heritage is legendary and has seen performances from acts as diverse as The Sex Pistols, Muddy Waters, Hugh Masekela, Lee Konitz, Oasis, Lonnie Donnegan, Jimmy McGriff and Travis to The Clash, The White Stripes, Yank Lawson, Sinead O&#39;Conner, Nico, Chris Barber and Beverly Knight, to name but a few.
