About

The Institute has been at the heart of Birminghamâ€™s cultural life for over 150 years. Originally founded by Act of Parliament in 1854 for the â€˜Diffusion and Advancement of Science, Literature and Art amongst all Classes of Persons resident in Birmingham and Midland Countiesâ€™, the BMI is a membership organisation which has a thriving programme of cultural and educational activities, including a wide spectrum of arts and science lectures, exhibitions and concerts. Both members and the general public are encouraged to participate. The building is also a venue for many externally-organised events and can be booked for conferences and meetings. The Institute also owns and runs the original Birmingham Library, founded in 1779. The Library collection is gradually growing by the regular purchase of new books, principally on the field of humanities and modern fiction.
