The mercurial talents of Riva Starr have recently given birth to his brand new Polaroid Beats EP, which landed a couple of weeks ago on his very own Snatch! Records.

Riva's unpredictable nature is part of the appeal of the dance music trailblazer. He seems equally as comfortable penning a crossover smash like his and Fatboy Slim's anthemic 'Eat, Sleep, Rave , Rpeat' as he is a slow burning underground head-nodder.

The new EP sees him purveying the latter of the two persuasions. Opener 'In My Soul' is a lush slab of viscous deep house, complete with trippy soulful vocals and a mournful piano riff that permeates the track. Riva veers away from the classic bouncing bass line that has become a modern deep house motif by electing for a subdued bass throb, providing an organic, engaging edge to the record.

'Voice Of God' on the other hand is a much more fierce animal. Riva has flexed his tech house skills to create a full throttle grooving monster with skewiff recurrent synth arpeggios, incessant hihats and ghostly operatic vocals that creeps menacingly in the background. The low end on the track is an absolute treat, whilst the atmospheric designs of the higher layers will have 'the heads' out there grinning with approval.

This snapshot of current trends (the EP is called Polaroid Beats - see what he did there) sees him in finer form than ever, reinterpreting popular tropes with considerable skill. Riva Starr has once again shown that no matter what genre he wishes to turn his hand to, his command of dance music really knows no limits. Catch him performing live at Wickerman Festival on the 25th July by grabbing your tickets here.
