Unlike the current climate of one hit wonders and internet sensationalism, Bonobo’s story is one of gradual incline. Since 1999, Simon Green has been an electronic producer worthy of serious attention, gaining respect and recognition throughout more discerning music circles. With release after release showcasing ever evolving sounds, Simon has never been a person content with sticking in any moulds or following current fads.
His 10 years plus of hard work culminated in one of the most critically acclaimed electronic albums of our times Black Sands (stream above on Spotify, the video to 'Kiara' is below). With the 2010 album breaking into public consciousness, his carefully honed craft felt as if it had finally arrived.
Earlier this year saw the hotly anticipated arrival of studio album number five - The North Borders, which went in at no.29 in the UK charts, an incredible achievement for a leftfield electronic music album.
However it’s Bonobo’s live sets that have given him such a reputation, really setting him apart from the crowd. Incorporating a full live band since back in 2004, he regularly deploys a singer, keyboardist, guitarist, saxophonist, string section, electronics, and drummer. The man himself leads from the middle usually playing bass. This is not cold and soulless electronic music that we may have become accustomed to, but warm, textured, uplifting, moody and charismatic, features lacking from the genre’s vast majority.
Utilising his live instrumentalists he recreates the dense layers and vast instrumentalism from the recorded project into a stunning and intoxicating live spectacle that transcends the root material.
Bonobo’s set at Canal Mills in Leeds will be, as is always the case with him, an unforgettable and genuinely unique take on electronic music, full of emotion and feeling.
