tarentum is not going out soon..
we began making music together while at university. we both hail from classical backgrounds, jesse a pianist and tom primarily a violinist (though he now plays several instruments including the bass and keys). early work consisted mainly of house music though tunes were always built around songs with strong melodies. this philosophy, of combining aspects of dance music with songs that wouldn't feel out of place at on a folk singer's set list, is still a central theme of our work today.
the album, i dreamt we were bank robbers', is a departure from past work in that it contains more down tempo, thoughtful material. though still grounded in the dance music that influenced us as teenagers (leftfield, daft punk, etc...) we wanted to create something that felt contemporary, yet was infused with influences that were more timeless and less prone to the vagaries of fashions. such influences include artists like neil young and paul simon and much further back to the classical period. tracks such as peace, a searing violin-led track composed by tom, who's love of classical music is tempered only by its lack of groove, were penned alongside others such as tides, originally written and performed as an acoustic singer/song-writer piece.
a firm belief in live performance means we have worked with several musicians in the production of the album. these include ben gale, a percussionist based in london who plays an electric xylophone; chris sharkey (lima), a guitarist from newcastle and rob mcvey (longview) on spanish guitar. finally becka ward, emma sargison, tuva andersen and therese ulvan have all provided vocals with the current live vocalists being lithuanian agne motieciute and holly thomas. with strings, bass guitars, electric guitars, electric xylophones, synths, vocoders, drums, acoustic guitars and vocals, the live performance is as important a part of tarentum as the studio production and something which we believe sets us apart from many electronica orientated acts today. it's not just about watching two men work a laptop, it's about musicianship and songs.
so far tarentum have had airplay on kiss fm, chill radio and the coca-cola new music podcast with adam and joe.
