Pigeonhole Disco Launch Party

This autumn a new clubnight hits Liverpool just as it reaches the finale of its Capital of Culture year. Pigeonhole Disco is the brainchild of DJ General Jimmy and Camilla Halstead, Jimmy the founding promoter of long running Liverpool club Superfly and local ezine Plastic Soup, and Halstead the regional promotions manager for Oxjam, the party wing of the global charity. Their aim is simple; throw a blisteringly good party that longingly looks forwards whilst ransacking the past, combining disco with electro, funk with techno and soul with house.
The first event enlists the talents of one of the premier British artists currently riding the crest of the Nu Disco wave, Mock N Toof. As the brains behind seminal imprint Tiny Sticks, Mock N Toof have been at the epicentre of the resurgent fixation with disco. Disco’s heritage has lived long, through its pivotal role in the development of house, techno and hip-hop, and more crucially in the adoption of the spirit of community and togetherness that prompted acid house. Mock N Toof, through their DIY approach to their record label and the integrity at the heart of their music, completely encapsulate everything good about the genre.
They’ve been regularly touted in interviews as James ‘LCD Soundsystem’ Murphy’s favourite producers, and have released a slew of remixes and productions on his hugely influential DFA imprint. The most recent was a killer remix of Hot Chip’s eponymous ‘Hold On’, which gained the support of Laurent Garnier, Gilles Peterson and Carl Craig, following on from their work previously on cult smash ‘Over and Over’. Never before touching down in Liverpool, it’s an exciting booking for one of the most promising developments
Pigeonhole Disco’s commitment to music beyond DJs is also utilised through the live performances of Melodie du Kronk (www.myspace.com/melodiedukronk) and Friday’s Ghost (www.myspace.com/fridaysghost), two of the most exciting bands bubbling in Liverpool’s extensive unsigned talent pool. Melodie du Kronk’s abstract electronica musings have instilled a hot and heady following whilst Friday’s Ghost wistful shoegazing noir has drawn comparisons to a late eighties Depeche Mode. Both add a devilishly dark edge to the disco sheen of Mock N toof.
And there’s a frightening level of local talent bubbling underneath also. One of Chibuku’s founding figures, Dirty Damo, plays his first DJ set in the city for almost three years, lighting the Fish Tank up with his eclectic mix of house/ disco/ classics/ rave. Joining him are he feted ironicists CantMixWontMixDontMixShouldntMix, who fresh from Creamfields look prepped for world domination. Star turns also come in the form of Dash, Jazzbo, Paul Outlar, Scott Lewis and of course promoter and the night’s sole resident, General Jimmy.
