Chibuku Shake Shake 05/04 at Barfly, liverpool
28th Mar 2008
And they don’t come much heavier or harder in the hits stakes than Roni
Size and his lyrical accompaniment Dynamite MC. The Bristollian brigadier is a
British music legend, deftly defying conception by bringing drum n bass out of
the hardcore breakbeat pigeonhole and adding un-equalled levels of musicianship
in the process. His Reprazent project won the mercury music prize and the
hearts of music lovers across the globe, adding jazz, hip-hop, funk and astute
soul to the genre in the mid nineties. As a DJ he’s equally as breathtaking,
fusing every raucous element of the music together with effortless aplomb.
Dynamite MC remains the perfect vocal accompaniment, his silky smooth drawl
(w)rapping itself around the bolshy beats. Long term friends of the Shake
Shake, they rinse it every time and this provides a fitting accompaniment to
their awe inspiring Reprazent live show in February.
Other long term friends are the body-popping electro indie stalwarts
Simian Mobile Disco. Able
to attract a cross breed of music fans like no other (with punk rockers, techno
nerds and fop haired indie schmoozers all getting down and dirty with the rave
heads at their shows) SMD are fast becoming electronica legends. Their DJ sets
encompass everything fresh and vibrant within dance music at the moment, adept
snapshots of glittering electro, rowdy breakbeats and stuttering vocals. Robot
Funk for the next millennia, SMD are simply scintillating.
And now for the new.
Luke Vibert is hardly a whippersnapper, but as of yet hasn’t graced the Chibuku
rave parlour; all that is set to change. One of the few artists who can
side-step either side of the real underground and the more accessible fringes,
Vibert is truly special. Whether cranking out his own angular funk on Warp,
knocking off expertly researched compilations of obscure Library Music or
cranking out the classic hallmarks of Dance music at his live shows, Vibert is
brilliantly unpredictable.
Plastic Little are
another coup de gras – hailing from Philly USA, they have established a unique,
kind of punky-hip-hop social satirising brand of music infused with surreal
humour and observations, with intriguing forays into rap. Their music keeps
everyone guessing and it’s a great addition to this Chibuku session.
Support on the night
comes from the drum n bass voice of Merseyside of the last decade Futurebound,
alongside Chibuku’s own disco evangelist Tane and purveyor of all things
obliquely underground Rich Furness.
