ST Georges Day in Leeds

16th Apr 2008

St Georges Day, as a whole does not seem to get the same level of celebration in England that other nations celebrate around the world. Previous years however, do seem to have seen a slight increase in the celebration of our Patron Saint, with events popping up around the country.

Some of these events have run for years but only recently captured the imagination of the public, others are a more recent contribution to the celebrations. Many are based around the tale of George & The Dragon, a story told at an early age to primary school children, in which St George rescued a fair maiden by slaying a dragon. These days the St Georges Cross is more associated with football matches and other sporting events that involve England being slayed, but the less said about that the better.

There’ll be knights and dragons galore at the Royal Armouries in Leeds this weekend as we celebrate brave St George. On Saturday don't miss the spectacular joust between St George and the Dragon at 2pm. Children can come dressed as George (or the dragon) and there is also an exciting dragon hunt around the armouries.

You can discover more about the legend of St George over the weekend through tales and songs from medieval storytelling troupe, Trouvere - For more information visit www.royalarmouriesshop.org

In a semi loose connection to St Georges Day, Purrfect Electro at Mission are holding a white party, with TV Rock in the main room. What's more if you dress in white you get in for half price, which must be a bonus. Over 18's only and not your traditional celebration, but worth a look if your into that kind of thing. APRIL 19, 20 - Morley's St George's Day fun has been extended this year to cover the whole weekend, with a family festival in the town centre on Saturday and the usual parade, displays, competitions and stalls at Morley Rugby Club and the Cricket Club on the Sunday.
