Various - Shapes EP:Y (Tru Thoughts)
Released - 04.06.07
Four brilliant tracks from my favourite label on this vinyl only EP, and they all have that itchy flavour.
First is the Part Time Heroes don their PTH Projects guise and take on Up Hygh's 'Compatible' from the killer Venus LP - it's safe to say it's the bomb! They use their great production skills to drop an ace dancefloor friendly version that is brimming with the latin spirit and the funk. The lyrics sound great over the mash up of ass shaking beats, both double and analogue basslines and a lovely piano line loop. This climbs and drops in all the right places to cause absolute havoc on the dancefloor. One for the Worldwide heads, this is up there with the likes of Jazzanova and stuff on Far Out. This knocked me for six on first play then gets better and better with each play. Future classic for sure!
Bonobo remixes Alice Russell's 'Mirror Mirror On The Wolf' in fine style. Just one of the many highlights off her 'Under The Munka Moon P2' LP. Alice's spine tingling vocal sounds great over Bonobo's blissed out and soaring strings, tight beats and warm bass grooves. This is perfect to chill to in the bars and backrooms whilst still being beaty enough for the soul loving clubs. Already looking forward to the new Alice Russell LP which is set for release in October 07.
The extended version of Quantic Soul Orchestra's 'Painting & Journeys' is superb. Will has subtly stretched out this awesome funk groove by another 2 and half minutes, making it into a DJ friendly club epic that will ram all funk and soul loving dancefloors with ease. Gorgeous strings, great percussion breaks and a bassline that fills the room and sounds great on a loud PA. The peaks and troughs are in all the right places to blow your head off in a club. One of the many killers on their 'Pushin On' LP just got better! Word is QSO are putting the finishing touches to their September 07 release - we are excited already!
Last but not least we get the ultra funky, souled out and bluesy 'Good Things' by Spengler - the next Jamie Cullum if there is any justice in this world. I have been playing this relentlessly off the Shapes 07:01 LP, so it's great to have it on vinyl. Really phat production, like Dilla at his best, and the great lyrics make this an anthem for anyone trying to make it in the music business. Massive!
