Me & You - Floating Heavy LP (Tru Thoughts)

12th May 2007

Me & You - Floating Heavy LP (Tru Thoughts)
Released - 02.07.07

TM Juke and Tru Thoughts head honcho Rob Luis have joined forces to become Me&You. Their first 7" Brown Paper bag / The Hoop Loop, released on 14.05.07, saw them drop two absolute bombs on their first mission. The duo was formed two years ago when they got together to produce a one off track for them both to play in their DJ sets. TM Juke went on to co-write Alice Russell's LP alongside delivering his own stunning 'Forward LP', whilst Rob got busy with his day job as A&R and owner of the coolest label in the U.K.

In 2006 Me&You were invited to play at Bestival and got together again to make a couple of DJ specials for their sets.  After an amazing reaction from the crowd and some serious web pesting via MySpace and the Tru Thoughts site they decided to record an album together. The LP is an eclectic fusion of breaks, soul, jazz, dub step, broken beat, reggae, disco, drum and bass, hip hop, calypso, afro, funk, acid house and the sounds of Egypt, Bollywood and Brazil.

Brown Paper Bag - It's a brave move taking on possibly the best drum and bass track ever, but this reggae styled cover of Roni Size's Reprazent classic pulls it off with flare! The intro cannot be mistaken for anything other than BPB, then in comes a trademark head nod beat from TM Juke and we are off grooving. Great instrumentation on this funky little gem - lovely horns and flute plus a nice take on the original bassline and strings. Yep, it doesn't get any better than this jolly little number. This will be packing funky beats loving dance floors far and wide over the coming summer months and it's another future classic under TT's belt. One you will keep going back to for a long time to come! Word is there is a Quantic Flowering Inferno dub version on MP3 coming soon...

The Hoop Loop is an instant floor worker that is easily as good, if not better than the flip. An upbeat funk gem, that is full of Latin soul, Brazilian sounding vocals, lovely brass and jazz flute, a funky drum break and Cuban styled keys to die for. This has it all and wouldn't sound out of place on a Diesler EP. The kind of track you can play over and over again and still not get sick of. Superb instrumentation throughout, this killer track blows my head off every time and it's great that it comes on an authentic looking and sounding 7". Definitely up there with Quantic and The Bamboo's, this gets the itch sound spot on and we love it - essential!

Sneaker Thief is definitely one of the standout cuts for me with its infectious horn and killer disco loops over funky Bugz style breakbeat come house style. This is super funky, has itch written all over it and is spot on my style. With a breakdown that is intended (and succeeds) in doing you in and a wicked percussion outro, this fits in perfectly between the Quantic and Diesler stuff and the more broken nu jazz and latin stuff I play. Expect to hear this smashing quality dance floors of many different genres in the near future.

Brighton Request Line (Skit B) (Skit C) breaks up the styles are two skits where Me&You's famous mates leave daft requests and serious messages for the gig tonight on the Me&You answer phone.

Elephant Takover is as heavy as they come broken bomb that has a bassline, that Seji and Domu would be proud of, over Egyptian percussion. This will have any decent crowd leaping and whooping, the kind of tune that would take the roof off at Co-Op. The boys tweak and filter the hell out of the bassline, dropping the drums in and out to cause real dancefloor devastation. The kind of tune you need to turn right up, sounds ace on a loud PA and makes you want to scream COME ON! A wicked groove that goes on and on and dips and climbs in all the right places. Massive!

Wouri River is an afro influenced number that fits snuggly in the mix between funk and down tempo beat cuts. It's all about the build on this one and when the drums and bass come in you can't help but think of Reprazent and DJ Die in their hay day. The kind of drum and bass the 30 plus can appreciate whilst still being programmed to take no prisoners on a DnB floor. Another quality side of Me&You's signature style that will go down a treat on any forward thinking dance floor.

Last Night is ace! It starts of with an old calypso tale with great lyrics of dance hall love over a head nod beat, then it drops to a horn break and one of the sludgiest basslines of the year pours from the speakers with DnB snares in hot pursuit.  This is tearing but never lets goes of the funk. Great for moving from one style to another and from the first listen you can imagine the jump up effect this will have in a club.

Ze Zam was previously available on the Shapes 07:01 LP. I love the percussion on this tempo changing nut job. It's far to say it's a production master piece. It's heavy, tribal and you need to turn it up!  Touted as a Brazilian Batecuda Battle Weapon, this is not dissimilar to what Azymuth do at their live shows but with a heavier bass and different synth sounds. Brooding, dark and drenched in funk. A flash of the future - bomb!

Got Any R&B is a great title and any decent DJ will see the irony of this blazing disco broken breaks mash up. Egyptian sounding loops and gut shaking basslines over superb percussion mixed with more bleeps and burps than a spectrum 48 loading tape - you have got to be down with the funk to pull that off!. Out comes a building groove that will all rock floors loving Quantic, Diesler and Seiji's tuffer tracks with ease. This is crazy and I love it. Blistering!

Random Search blends dub step beats, Bollywood loops and reggae basslines will have them jumping in the right clubs. Useful bed for acapellas as 'Space Lizards' proves...

One More Tune - the LP plays through as a great LP should do and these end of club night shouts for "one more" come just at the right time.

Last Night (Last Heads) is an end of night anthem if ever there was one - the old calypso tale of dance hall love over a reggae vibed funk, honky tonk piano and a head nod hip hop beat. The kind of tune that sends people home with smiles on their faces and an infectious hook stuck in their heads - "Last night, going round the town, I heard some music that really blew me down".

Space Lizards is a hidden gem uses the Random Search track as a base the versatile Young Max from Dirty Diggers argues for and against conspiracy theories about media lies and the lizards plan to take over. The lyrics are partially serious, partially tongue in cheek, they add a new dimension to the track and as always Max's lyrical delivery is great.

Available from Etch Shop and all good music shops from 2nd July 2007.
